Key points
Cristian Mungiu both wrote and directed Fjord (2026), a family drama with legal thriller elements, which he also co-produced. It is a co-production between Romania, France, Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden. Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve play a conservative couple of Romanian-Norwegian descent who relocate to Norway to be near their wife’s family. Their children become involved with the local school community, leading to a child protection investigation after a teacher reports bruising on one of the children.
The story begins with Mihai Gheorghiu, an engineer, and his Norwegian wife Lisbet, a nurse, moving to Norway with their five children. Their neighbor Mats Halberg, a school headmaster, and his wife Mia, an attorney, become involved in the family's life. Elia and Emmanuel, the oldest children, form a friendship with Noora, Mats’ daughter. Frida, a teacher and Child Services worker, notices bruising on Elia during physical education and reports it. Mihai admits to police that he spanks the children but denies abuse. Child Services removes the children from the home and begins an investigation. The family suspects religious discrimination and hires an attorney, but she drops the case after a first hearing. Lisbet asks Mia to represent them. Mia investigates and suspects a language barrier may have caused a miscommunication. She also learns that Judith, the youngest daughter, told a classmate that her sexual orientation was contrary to God’s will, which may have triggered the report. Mihai grows frustrated with delays and reaches out to the Romanian embassy and conservative Christian groups. Noora goes in secret to visit both her and Emmanuel at the foster home they share. At the final hearing, Mia attempts to show doubt about whether the bruising was abusive.
The cast includes Sebastian Stan as Mihai Gheorghiu, Renate Reinsve as Lisbet Gheorghiu, Ellen Dorrit Petersen as Noora Halberg, and Lisa Loven Kongsli as Mia Halberg. At the 2026 Cannes Film Festival on 18 May, the film made its global debut and took home the Palme d'Or along with multiple additional awards. It was also screened at the Sydney, Karlovy Vary, Hurtigruten Nordic, and Sarajevo film festivals, and had its North American premiere at the Telluride Film Festival. It was selected for the Special Presentations section of the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival.
