Plot Summary
Olive Smith, a biology student, experiences vision problems due to expired contact lenses just before her interview for Stanford University’s PhD program. A researcher in the lab interrupts her, annoyed that she is using his lab’s restroom. He offers brief encouragement before leaving without introducing himself.
Olive eventually enrolls at Stanford as a PhD student. Initially reserved and anxious, she forms close bonds with classmates Anh and Jeremy and shares a residence with her best friend Malcolm. Though Olive once had a crush on Jeremy, she later realizes he is interested in Anh.
During a lab session, Olive overhears Anh rejecting Jeremy’s advances and understands that the rejection is meant to protect her feelings. To allow Anh to date Jeremy, Olive pretends to be in a relationship.
When Anh nearly discovers Olive working in the lab during a fake date, she kisses the first person present: Dr. Adam Carlsen, a postdoctoral fellow nicknamed "Dr. Evil" for his blunt and hostile demeanor. Adam threatens to file a Title IX complaint over the kiss, but instead proposes a deal: they will fake a romantic relationship. This allows Olive’s deception to remain believable for Anh and helps Adam renew his grant by appearing more committed to Stanford.
Olive and Adam meet at a café first, then go to a department picnic as a pair. Olive applies sunscreen to Adam’s bare skin after being urged by her friends. Despite their awkwardness, department head Dr. Fastuca approves of their pairing.
At a faculty party hosted by Dr. Fastuca, Olive meets Dr. Tom Benton, Adam’s former colleague. Tom asks her to share her pancreatic cancer research, but she is questioned about its legitimacy and deflects any discussion of her personal connection to it.
