Who we are
Newyorkmatrix (“we”, “us”) publishes news at this website. Questions about this policy or your data: email [email protected] or use our contact form.
What we collect
- Newsletter: your email address and when you subscribed, if you sign up.
- Contact form: your name, email address and message.
- Contributor applications: the details you send us, if you apply to write for us.
- Reading statistics: we count the pages that are read, where readers came from (for example a search engine or a social network) and the kind of device (phone, tablet or computer). We use no cookies for this and keep no IP address: each reader is counted with an anonymous code that changes every day, so we can never recognize you or follow you from one day to the next. These counts are kept for 13 months.
- Analytics (only if you allow it): Google Analytics collects information such as the pages you visit, your approximate location, device and browser, using cookies. IP addresses are anonymized.
- Advertising: Google AdSense shows ads on our pages. With your consent it may use cookies to show ads based on your interests; without it, ads are not personalized (Google may still use cookies to limit how often an ad is shown and to prevent fraud).
- Security logs: our servers briefly record IP addresses to protect the site against abuse.
How we use it
To send the newsletter you asked for, answer your messages, consider your application, understand which stories are useful, show advertising that pays for our journalism, and keep the site secure. We don't sell your personal information for money.
Who we share it with
Service providers that run parts of the site for us: Google (Analytics and AdSense) and our email provider for the newsletter. Personalized advertising may count as “sharing” or a “sale” under some US state laws; you can opt out at any time (see below). We may disclose information if the law requires it.
Cookies
See our cookie policy for the full list. Analytics and personalized-ad cookies are only set if you allow them, and you can change your choice any time with “Cookie settings” at the bottom of every page.
Your privacy choices
- Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information: turn off personalized ads on Your privacy choices.
- Global Privacy Control: if your browser sends a GPC signal, we treat it as an opt-out of selling and sharing, and personalized ads stay off.
- Newsletter: every email has a one-click unsubscribe link.
Your rights (US residents)
Depending on your state (for example California, Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia, Texas and others), you may have the right to know what personal information we hold about you, to get a copy, to correct it, to delete it, and to opt out of its sale, sharing or use for targeted advertising. To make a request, email [email protected]. We will confirm your request, may need to verify that it's you, and will respond within the time the law requires. We won't treat you differently for using these rights. You can appeal a decision by replying to our answer.
Children
Our site is for a general audience and is not directed at children under 13. We don't knowingly collect personal information from children under 13; if you believe a child has sent us information, contact us and we will delete it.
How long we keep it
Newsletter details until you unsubscribe; contact messages for up to two years; security logs for a short period; our own anonymous reading statistics for 13 months; analytics data under Google's retention settings (14 months).
Security
We protect data with encryption in transit, access controls and regular security reviews. No system is perfectly secure.
Changes
If we change this policy we will update the date at the top, and explain significant changes on this page.
