Guardians of the Galaxy is a 2014 science fiction, superhero, comedy, and crime film produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. Directed by James Gunn, with a screenplay by Gunn and Nicole Perlman, it features an ensemble cast including Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Zoe Saldaña, Vin Diesel, and Bradley Cooper. In 1988, Earth-based hero Peter Quill is taken by Yondu Udonta's crew of alien raiders and smugglers. In 2014, Quill steals a mysterious Orb on the abandoned planet Morag but is attacked by henchmen of the Kree renegade Ronan the Accuser. Yondu discovers the theft and issues a bounty for Quill's capture. Gamora, an assassin sent by Ronan, ambushes Quill and steals the Orb. The four—Quill, Rocket, Groot, and Drax—are captured by Nova Corps officers and held in the Kyln prison. Drax attempts to kill Gamora after learning she is linked to Ronan, who killed his wife and daughter. Drax is persuaded by Quill that Gamora might lure Ronan, but Gamora admits she betrayed him and denies allowing him to harness the Orb's energy. The group learns Gamora plans to sell the Orb to the Collector Taneleer Tivan. Quill, Rocket, Groot, and Drax work with Gamora to escape the Kyln. They flee to Knowhere, a city planet made from a severed Celestial head. A drunken Drax summons Ronan while the others meet Tivan. Tivan opens the Orb, revealing an Infinity Stone of immense power that destroys all but the most powerful beings. Carina, Tivan's slave, grabs the Stone and triggers an explosion that engulfs Tivan's collection. Ronan arrives and defeats Drax. The others flee by ship, pursued by Ronan's forces, including Gamora's adoptive sister Nebula. Nebula crashes Gamora's vessel, leaving her adrift in the void. Ronan's fighters capture the Orb. Before entering space with Gamora, Quill reaches out to Yondu and hands him his helmet as a means of survival. Yondu arrives and retrieves the pair. Rocket, Drax, and Groot threaten to destroy the Orb if Ronan does not stop pursuing them.
