Overview
Oppenheimer (2023) is a historical biographical thriller film written, co-produced, and directed by Christopher Nolan. Based on the 2005 biography American Prometheus by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin, the film chronicles the life of J. American theoretical physicist Robert Oppenheimer was responsible for guiding the creation of the world's first nuclear weapons in the World War II era.
The film was announced in September 2021. Christopher Nolan has released a film that is his initial work not handled by Warner Bros. as its distributor. Pictures since Memento (2000), due to his conflicts with the studio over its simultaneous theatrical and HBO Max release strategy.
During the 1930s, Oppen's academic role spanned both the California Institute of Technology and the University of California, Berkeley. While several Berkeley academics were members of the Communist Party, Oppenheimer did not join the party.
After World War II began, Ernest Lawrence of the Radiation Lab raised concerns about Oppenheimer’s communist associations. As a result, Oppenheimer reduced his public involvement. He was later approached by General Leslie Groves to lead the Manhattan Project. Oppenheimer proposed establishing a new laboratory at Los Alamos, New Mexico, where the team would work to develop an atomic bomb before the Nazis. Edward Teller was recruited to the project and initially theorized that a single nuclear explosion could ignite the Earth’s atmosphere. When this theory was disproved, Teller shifted focus to fusion-based weapons.
On July 16, 1945, the United States successfully conducted the Trinity test, the first detonation of a nuclear weapon. Subsequently, the United States dropped atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, effectively ending World War II. After the bombings, Oppenheimer met with President Harry S. Truman. He expressed remorse over the creation of the bomb. Truman acknowledged Oppenheimer’s role but did not share the same emotional response, stating he was annoyed by the physicist’s regret. Oppenheimer was widely recognized as the 'father of the atomic bomb,' though in the years that followed, he became a vocal advocate for nuclear non-proliferation.
Security and Post-War Developments
In 1949, the Soviet Union successfully tested a plutonium bomb, similar to one developed at Los Alamos. During a meeting of top advisors, Oppenheimer opposed expanding nuclear arms development and advocated for arms talks with the Soviet Union. This stance clashed with that of Teller and others who supported a more aggressive weapons program. Past security concerns resurfaced, including Oppenheimer’s rekindled affair with Jean Tatlock, a former Communist partner, after receiving security clearance in 1942. To shield his friend Haakon Chevalier from a spying probe, Oppenheimer lied directly to security officer Boris Pash.
In 1954, Oppenheimer faced a security hearing. The film dramatizes the events leading to this hearing and the consequences of his past actions.
