The Story
Retired Special Forces Command Sergeant Major James Belmont, suffering from PTSD, and his combat dog Odin, also affected by trauma, land their Cessna Skywagon on a remote Alaskan lake and spend one night camped there. During his forest trek, James encounters Watkins, a lively stranger, who establishes a camp close by. They talk late into the night. The following morning, Watkins leaves, offering James a book in return for a beer he had pilfered from the camp. James notices a highlighted passage in the book.
James and Odin fly off, yet James experiences a heart attack during the flight, causing the plane to plunge into the water. Odin is thrown from the plane. James finds him nearby, barely conscious but alive, and returns to the wreckage to recover his gear. After Odin regains strength, they start walking toward civilization, a distance of about 58 miles (93 kilometers), according to James's estimate.
During their trek, they encounter a grizzly bear that Odin confronts until it retreats. Later, they cross a narrow wooden bridge over a valley. James loses his balance, sends Odin flying, and drops into the swift water below, where his arm gets caught between stones and snaps. Odin discovers James in the river, pulls him out, and helps realign the broken bone.
They later observe a pack of gray wolves attacking a moose calf and retreat cautiously. That night, however, the wolves ambush them. James defends himself with a spear and knife, while Odin protects him. James kills all but one wolf, which escapes, and suffers a bite to the stomach. On the next day, the group moves through a bog, and James ends up pinned under branches that lie beneath the water. He escapes by diving underwater.
With fatigue and wounds worsening, James keeps falling before finally climbing to the hill's summit. He halts mid-step, directs Odin toward a close-by path, and tells him to sprint toward it. He writes a letter detailing their ordeal and his final wishes, leaving all his money to whoever adopts the dog. James then dies. Odin moves away from him and arrives at the road, where Amber, a young woman, spots him.
