Choosin' Texas by Ella Langley: meaning, release, credits and chart history

Ella Langley's country track 'Choosin' Texas' dropped on October 17, 2025, as the opening single for her upcoming 2026 second studio album, Dandelion. A woman in the song comes to understand that her partner’s affection has always been tied to Texas, not her or Tennessee, which was her first assumption. It was written in about 30 minutes at a writing retreat in October 2024, with Ella Langley, Miranda Lambert, Joybeth Taylor, and Luke Dick. Ella Langley, Miranda Lambert, and Ben West co-produced the track, with Lambert providing background vocals and Tom Bukovac and Ben F-landers handling guitar.

The official music video was released on April 1, 2026, and was directed by Langley alongside Wales Toney and Caylee Robillard. It was filmed at the Stagecoach Ballroom in Fort Worth, Texas, and features Langley and her love interest at a bar, with a storyline that builds to her departure in a van with Lambert and her band, after sensing his lack of faithfulness. The video includes cameo appearances by Texas-based musicians such as Wade Bowen, Mike Ryan, Casey Donahew, Tanner Usrey, J.B. Mauney, Dale Brisby, and Shad Mayfield.

The song debuted at No. 39 on the Billboard Hot 100, Langley's highest debut at the time. It peaked at No. 1 on February 9, 2026, becoming her first top 10 entry and number one on the all-genre chart. It is the first song by a female artist to simultaneously top the Billboard Hot 100, Hot Country Songs, and Country Airplay charts. The song became the longest-running number-one hit on the Billboard Hot 100 by a female country artist and surpassed Mariah Carey's record to become the longest-reigning chart-topper in United States history. It also topped charts in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom.

Caitlin Hall of Holler wrote that the song is a 'quietly powerful reflection on love and place.' Jessica Nicholson of Billboard remarked that it 'captures the essence of country music with emotional depth.' Hattie Lindert of Pitchfork called it a contender for 2026 song of the summer, describing it as 'a heartfelt, grounded piece that resonates with authenticity.'
