American singer-songwriter and record producer (born 1985)
Bruno Mars is an American singer-songwriter and record producer, celebrated for his distinctive vocal range, retro-inspired performances, and musical versatility. With over 150 million records sold worldwide, he is one of the best-selling music artists of all time and a defining figure in modern pop music.
Bruno Mars, born Peter Gene Hernandez on October 8, 1985, in Honolulu, Hawaii, grew up in a musically rich household. Peter Hernandez and Bernadette San Pedro Bayot first connected during a performance, with Bernadette dancing hula and Peter playing percussion. Mars was nicknamed "Bruno" by his father, who saw a resemblance to professional wrestler Bruno Sammartino. Raised in the Waikīkī neighborhood, he was surrounded by music from a young age, with his mother a singer and dancer and his father a fan of Little Richard. At age three, he began impersonating Elvis Presley, a habit that shaped his stage presence. By age four, he was performing with his family's band, the Love Notes, at venues like the Sheraton Waikiki. He gained local fame in Hawaii for his Elvis impersonations, even appearing in a Hawaiian tabloid in 1990 as "Little Elvis" and performing in the halftime show of the 1990 Aloha Bowl. Mars also appeared in the 1992 film Honeymoon in Vegas and on The Arsenio Hall Show at age six. After his parents divorced when he was 12, he and his family lived in impoverished conditions, including in a closed bird zoo and on rooftops. Despite being bullied in school, he remained committed to music.
Mars became a recognized songwriter and launched The Smeezingtons alongside him as a co-founder. He rose to fame after featuring on B.o.B's number-one hit "Nothin' on You" (2009). His debut album, Doo-Wops & Hooligans (2010), was followed by Unorthodox Jukebox (2012) and 24K Magic (2016), all of which achieved critical and commercial success. The latter won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year. Mars scored multiple chart-topping hits, including "Just the Way You Are," "Grenade," "Locked Out of Heaven," "When I Was Your Man," and "That's What I Like." His 2014 collaboration with Mark Ronson, "Uptown Funk," became Billboard's best-performing song of the 2010s. In 2021, he released An Evening with Silk Sonic with Anderson .Paak, featuring the number-one single "Leave the Door Open." In 2024, he released two number-one duets: "Die with a Smile" with Lady Gaga and "APT." with Rosé. His 2026 solo album, The Romantic, debuted with the tenth US number-one single, "I Just Might."
Mars appeared in the 1992 film Honeymoon in Vegas. He also starred in the 2012 film Bastardi 3. He performed in the 2017–2018 live concert series Bruno Mars: 24K Magic Live at the Apollo.
